How long does a loft conversion take?

When thinking about whether to have some kind of major improvement project carried out at your home, it’s understandable that one of your main concerns might well be about the levels of disruption you’re likely to be facing.

For that reason, when we get enquiries from prospective customers regarding a loft conversion, one of the most common questions we get asked is: how long does a dormer loft conversion take? (or Velux or other type of conversion).

This month, we’re looking into this question, so that you can understand a loft conversion timescale and take that into account when deciding whether or when to go ahead with one.

How long does a loft conversion take?

There is, unfortunately, no definitive answer to this question, because every project is different and each can throw up its own issues, delays and problems. Nevertheless, as a rough guide, when having a dormer or Velux loft conversion, you should probably expect us to be working on site for a minimum of four or five weeks, while more complicated conversions, such as a hip to gable loft conversion, could take as long as seven or eight weeks.

Another factor that might impact the amount of time your loft conversion is likely to take is what kind of room you’ll be having. For example, if you’re going to be using the space as a new bedroom with an ensuite, that will mean adding plumbing and tiling, which will probably take longer than a playroom or home office conversion. Then there are things like adding stairs, changing lintels to deal with heavier load demands, and whether you want special finishing touches and extras added to make your new room even more luxurious.

When we hold discussions with you regarding any planned loft conversion work, we’ll always try to give you an estimate of how long it will take if all goes smoothly. However, you need to bear in mind that unforeseen problems can occur at any time to throw timescales off, but we will always keep you right up to date with our progress.

What is the best time of year to do a loft conversion?

Along with the question of how long a loft conversion will take to complete once started, the other common question we get about the loft conversion process is whether there’s a time of year best suited to doing the job. And here the answer is – not really! A good builder will make sure that your roof is properly covered to protect the inside from any bad weather. Having said that, many homeowners do prefer to opt for spring or summer when there’s a better chance of better weather.

The other thing to consider is your own convenience. For instance, you might want to time the work for when you’re spending less time at home so that the noise and disturbance such work inevitably entails won’t be as much of an intrusion.

FAQs
How long will my project take?

Each project is different and the size of the build will determine the time it will take to complete; however, an average rear extension/loft conversion will take approximately six weeks from start to finish.

Will I be able to live in my property while the work goes on?

Yes, you will be able to live in the property. If this is the case, we will attempt to leave the breaking through into the house until as late as possible in the project.

Will someone be on site every day?

Yes, we will have someone on site every day. However, the caveat to this is if we are waiting on drying times or materials. That being said, we will endeavour to have a team member/team members present as much as possible to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner.

Will an extension add value to my property?

Absolutely, it is becoming more and more popular to add space to your existing property instead of the hassle and fees involved with moving. Adding additional square meterage can add up to 10-20% onto the market value.

Can you help with plans/designs?

Of course, we can offer suggestions and ideas, and show you previous projects. We can also arrange for you to visit a previous project if required. We have built relationships with trusted architects and can introduce you to our preferred contacts in order to obtain your drawings.

How long does it take to get planning permission?

It will depend upon whether you are applying for permitted planning or full planning permission. Different councils work to different timescales; however, as a guide from submission of plans it will take approximately 8-12 weeks.
